The Physician Assistant, Surgery will:

• Manage and provides care for the patient requiring intensive care, intermediate care. Utilize team members and written protocols for consultation under the direction and supervision of the attending physician.
- Admit to the patient and initiates appropriate interventions according to protocols.
- Perform a complete physical examination and assessment, discriminating between normal an abnormal finding.
- Collaborate with physician concerning pertinent history, physical findings, diagnostic and therapeutic measures initiated on admitted patient.
- Select and order tests and procedures, as approved by the physician, necessary to augment physical findings and to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings according to protocols.
- Participates in daily rounds and pre-op classes.
- Intervenes appropriately to assist in meeting the emotional needs of the families.
Collaborates with nursing, physical therapy, and other disciplines to ensure the plan of care is implemented and outcomes are achieved.
- Coordinates with primary nurse 1) discharge follow up care 2) specialty referrals and the preparation and distribution of discharge instructions to the patients.

• Verify that the quality of care is documented in the medical record.

• Participate in educational activities which promote quality patient care.

• Participate in activities which contribute to the education of other professionals.

• Participate in research projects.

Requirements:
  • Graduate from an accredited PA program.
  • License to practice as PA in the state of New Jersey (pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination - PANCE) or for new graduate a temporary authorization, while waiting for license.
  • Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA).
  • Certification Renewal Requirements- 100 hours of CME every 2 years.
    • 80 CME hours must be clinical in nature (directly related to maintaining or increasing medical knowledge).
    • 20 CME hours may be earned in clinical activities or for professional development activities that indirectly relate to patient care. (i.e. seminars on conducting medical research).
    • Currently CDS and DEA required.
    • BLS and ACLS certification required, as approved by the American Heart Association.
