The Histology Technician Per Diem will:
  • Process all specimens.
    • Set up tissue processor in predetermined sequence in accordance with established Department procedures.
    • Replace chemicals on a regular basis in accordance with established Department procedures.
    • Set instruments for defined timing sequence as observed by actual time out in the A.M. in accordance with established Department procedures.
    • Maintain familiarity with procedure/policy for referred biopsy specimens.
  • Embed processed tissue samples.
    • Prepare molds for tissue samples in accordance with established Department procedures.
    • Embed tissue samples in accordance with established Department procedures.
  • Cut, mount, stain and label slides and match to corresponding requisition form.
    • Prepare and mount wrinkle- free sections.
    • Cut section of four to five (4-5) micron thickness.
    • Deparafinize sections completely.
    • Change all staining solutions and prepares special stains as needed.
    • Perform a wide variety of special stains.
    • Check Q.C. slides/special stain slides for adequacy of staining properties.
    • Perform special stains within established timeframe.
  • Maintain daily reports.
    • Record number of blocks per day as evidenced by daily inspection of log book.
    • Record number of slides per day as evidenced by daily inspection of log book.
    • Record number of Special Stains per day as evidenced by daily inspection of log book.
  • Store files and blocks.
    • Accurately file slides and blocks in strict numerical order.
  • Maintain equipment and Quality Control.
    • Record temperature on tissue processor on a daily basis.
    • Record temperatures of water and paraffin baths on a daily basis.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education in-services.
    • Attend and participate in all mandatory in-service seminars.
    • Attend and participate in continuing education seminars as scheduled.
  • Participate in training and instructing Residents and new employees.
    • Train and instruct Residents and new employees in response to Department needs.
  • Maintain an orderly and efficient work area.
    • Conform to safety protocols as outlined in the safety and chemical hygiene plans.
    • Demonstrate good laboratory hygiene according to departmental policy with no more than two documented instances of non-compliance.
    • Conform to laboratory dress code.
    • Participate in yearly formaldehyde/kylene badge checks.


Requirements:
  • One year training in approved Histology program.
  • Eligible for ASCP Histology registry/equivalent training and experience required.
